Urban Red Rumps

Hi all

I’m used to seeing Red Rumped Parrots at the Fawkner Cemetery when I drive passed on my way to and from work, but today there is a pair seriously checking out a piece of square channel used as a gate support in the street where I work in Brunswick. The nearest park would be about a kilometre away and there is very little around here other than houses, offices and small factories. (Although Royal Park is not too far away)

Are they becoming more urbanised? Or have they always been like this and I have just not noticed. I have been working here for 10 years now and have not seen them around here before, even in the parks and only started seeing them at Fawkner in the last 2-3 years. Maybe it’s a drought thing?

Whatever, I hope they don’t go through with the nesting as it will be like an oven once the hot weather is truly upon us and I would be surprised of success.

Cheers

Bob

Hi Bob I worked in Brunswick for 24 years up till 2007 and saw Red Rump often during the latter 10 years, more often near the royal childrens and mostly at the corner of gatehouse/the avenue/royal parade corner Regards peter baitz

    Bob

I counted 8 Red-rumped Parrots on the Yarra bank between Morrell Bridge and Swan Street Bridge recently. I also saw a small flock feeding on the nature strip in Royal Parade, apparently oblivious to cars, cyclists and pedestrians

On the other hand, they used to frequent the park opposite my home in Box Hill but I haven’t seen any there for several years.

    Regards

    David

Hi Bob, The Red Rumps have lived in Royal Park for years, decades. They are also common feeding on the median strips in Royal Parade all the way in past Melb. Uni. The also show interest in the hollows in the Elm trees. They just get about their business as if no one was about. A lovely sight. I have also seen them in Carlton street trees over towards the Museum & Exhibition Gardens too. I don’t tend to see them in Brunswick or Coburg, except over around Merri Creek. Wendy
