pale blue eyestripe on Chestnut Teal

Written by

I was rather surprised to find a pair of Chestnut Teal on a small dam on a woodland reserve in Canberra (for Canberrans, the ‘New Line Quarry’ site).

I was even more surprised to observe that the male had a pale blue eyestripe behind the eye on both sides. (Rather poor picture at http://www.jleonard.net/mystbird.htm).

Has anyone seen anything similar to this?

Was this actual feather hue, or a reflection effect on the drake’s very glossy head?
