mystery bird ID

Hi all, On a trip to the Birdsville track, SA recently I observed a greyish, honeyeater-like bird in a lignum bush that has got me baffled as to what it might be. I have put a set of digiscoped photos on my website: http://www.sabirding.com/ http://picasaweb.google.com/waanders.peter/MysteryBird11Nov2010?feat=directlinkIt was about the size of a White-plumed Honeyeater or perhaps a centimeter smaller. I’d greatly appreciate any suggestions!

cheers,

Peter Waanders

    G’day Peter,

I agree with Chris and can’t see any features that would discount a juvenile Horsefield Bronze Cuckoo, they are very plain.

    Cheers Jeff.

Have you considered an immature Black-eared Cuckoo? Cheers Nicci

I agree. We saw a similarly dull individual at Port Gawler (in the bushes among the samphire) not long ago.

    cheers, Bert

Thanks Chris, it was considered, and not ruled out, but the bird was very plain grey all over. Let’s see what others think, cheers Peter

    Hi Peter,

To my eyes that bird looks like a young Horsfield’s Bronze-cuckoo. The bill is definitely cuckoo-like, and there seems to be a smudgy dark stripe through the eye. Let me know if you think it fits with your field observations.

    Regards, Chris Sanderson
