FW: Status of Paradise Shelduck

They were there for about 3 or 4 months and were quite mobile, moving from lake to lake, and flying away for a few days and then returning. I don’t think it was ever definitely established whether they were wild birds or escapees from a collection. They are on the bird list for the garden though. I don’t know if they were captive birds but were not in an enclosure. I couldn’t tell whether they had been pinioned. Regards Greg Dr Greg. P. However the species is on a Birds Australia checklist of Australian birds, implying records this side of the ditch sometime. However when I check with Birdata the cupboard appears to be bare. Presumably the inclusion on the BA list refers to the 5 birds on Lord Howe Island (LHI) for a few days in 1950, as reported in HANZAB. If all of that is correct this would seem to be the first time the species has made it to the mainland. Have I interpreted the situation correctly? If so its a pity the Birdata map doesn’t show the LHI record. Martin Butterfield http://franmart.blogspot.com.au/
