Budgies in the SW of WA?

Hi all Budgies in the SW of WA – not the most pressing issue, I admit. I agree with Frank that Purple-crowned Lorikeets are a possibility in the SW of WA, but I don’t think that one would easily confuse these “short-tailed, screaming bullets” with budgies. More likely to be confused with budgies in flight are, in my eyes, Elegant Parrots. Each summer I spend some time at Yallingup/Dunsborough, and I have seen small flocks of Elegant Parrots in that area during summer at various occasions. I wouldn’t put my money on Rock Parrot, although this species occurs in that area. All this said, all of them have wings. Happy New year to all! Budgerigars are irregular visitors to the SW. We had one on the Twitchathon in December 2013. That year there were quite a few down to the Great Eastern Highway and further south, but still well east of Perth. When they do visit the south west, they are usually reported in many places, as happened that year. In 2015 there were very few reports south of Cue. We had one on the campout at Charles Darwin Reserve (NE of Wubin which is well NE of Perth) in early June. _________________________________________________________________ Frank O’Connor Birding WA http://birdingwa.iinet.net.au Phone : (08) 9386 5694 Email : foconnor@iinet.net.au
