Only other KI record was of a lone adult in farmland NW of Kingscote on 11 October 2011; replicated timing thought to be birds on passage from inland wintering grounds back to SE Australia breeding grounds. Hooded Plover (Thinornis rubricollis) (2) breeding; incubating eggs at nest on sandy delta of Harriet River Mouth, Vivonne Bay, Kangaroo Island, 11 October 2014. Eastern Reef Egret (Egretta sacra) (1) initially Wreckers Beach, later feeding in rock pools at The Tadpole, D’Estrees Bay, KI, 13 October 2014 Buff-banded Rail (Gallirallus philippensis) (1) in samphire saltmarsh at American River foreshore, KI, 20 October 2014 (C Baxter for N Redman) White-bellied Sea-Eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster) (2) newly discovered active nest in mallee tree on N coast of KI, 13 October 2014 (C Baxter for N Maurovic) White-necked Heron (Ardea pacifica) (1) Freshwater Tagell’s Lagoon, lower reaches of Cygnet River, KI, 15 October 2014; rare on KI but observations of single transient birds are increasing. Yellow-billed Spoonbill (Platalea flavipes) (10) Freshwater Tagell’s Lagoon, lower Cygnet River, KI, 15 October 2014; including a pair incubating eggs in large stick nest high in River Red Gum near a backwater swamp. Freckled Duck (Stictonetta naevosa) (c 150) still present on freshwater Duck Lagoon, lower Cygnet River, KI, 25 October 2014; have been camped/feeding here since start of September 2014. Bar-tailed Godwit (Limosa lapponica) (12) briefly stopped-over and fed at Emu Bay foreshore, KI, 21 October 2014 (C Baxter for K. ‘Snow’ Dennis). Cape Barren Goose (Cereopsis novaehollandiae) (c200) in green pasture and lawns at Hanson Bay Sanctuary, Western KI Caravan Park and to a lesser extent, Flinders Chase NP visitor area, Karatta, KI, 28 October 2014; small number of pairs bred at all three locations during winter; FCNP breeding massively reduced from 1980’s when c 90 pairs bred on pastured flats near HQ; grassy flats, in absence of previous superphosphate fertiliser regime, have now largely reverted back to Native Couch (Sporobolus sp), mosses, lichens, Blue Devil (Eryngium sp) and Bulbine semibarbata. Many of the trees still consist of burnt branches and twigs, so it was lovely to see them again. A willie wagtail was not so welcoming. It attacked one of them then sat on the vacated twig, although it had at least 100 nearby twigs to choose from. Elegant Parrot (Neophema elegans) (6) One of the most depressing spots in our property is the direct seeding, which we used to call the Amazon Jungle, but which now consists mostly of dead Acacias. But it is not all bad. 2 of the elegant parrots sat in a dead bush and were easily seen among the leafless twigs, while another 4 flew around ‘zitting’. There were about 6 weebills, including a tiny one that looked as if it was mainly fluff, although it flew competently. A singing honeyeater decided they were in its territory and there ensued a spectacular aerial chase. Yesterday evening there was a spectacular lightning storm, with brilliant forks going to ground all around us, and plenty of overhead flashes. But we breathed a sigh of relief when rain came and the lightning stopped, with no fires started. Reported by: Barbara and Peter Bansemer on Monday, October 27, 2014 ——————————————— Date: Tuesday, October 28, 2014 Location: Bates Siding, E-W Railway Line Princess Parrot (Polytelis alexandrae) (2) a belated report of suspected Princess Parrot observation near Bates Siding, E-W Railway Line, mid year 2014; in communication with David Baxter, regular on freight train run from Port Augusta to Cook, he described as having a reasonably good view of two parrots about the size of blue bonnets with lime green wings and unmistakeable pink throats/breast fly briefly in front of train. He reported this to me at the time and for one reason or another I have only now reported it; unusual southerly report but undoubtedly genuine. The frogmouth was calling from what appeared to be a stick nest, and a visit in the daylight revealed a bird still sat on the structure, which was less flimsy than last year’s effort. Perhaps nesting is really happening. Red Knot (Calidris canutus) (1) one lone bird observed feeding with godwits Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres) (5) well camouflaged at Thompson Beach! able to get quite close for photograph without disturbing the birds Sharp-tailed Sandpiper (Calidris acuminata) (20) feeding with stints along the coast line Red-capped Plover (Charadrius ruficapillus) (1) everywhere! Great Egret (Casmerodius albus) (24) very pretty in breeding plumage. beautiful sight all lined up together standing in the water Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) (2) in breeding plumage hanging out with the great egrets Horsfield’s Bronze-Cuckoo (Chrysococcyx basalis) (1) one bird observed adjacent to the beach Grey Butcherbird (Cracticus torquatus) (1) One bird being harassed by singing honeyeaters!
