Yesterday the local wildlife carer was handed 2 young SFD which were found sheltering near the ship loader in the harbour. This species is uncommon here and the birds, going by their size difference seem to be maybe a week apart in age. They were covered in bauxite mud and the smaller one is suffering concussion. My field guides all indicate these birds only lay one egg at a time making me ask the question – how did these 2 unusual birds come to be together sheltering in a shed in Weipa? Where they were found hasn’t been used in a couple of days since ships weren’t coming in due to the impending cyclone. Any ideas or records of more than one egg per SFD nest?
