Thank you to Malcolm and all those who replied to my RFI. I took your advice and stayed for two nights and had the best part of three days. Was wonderful. Had no idea the Noddies, Buff-banded Rails, Ruddy Turnstones, Bridled Terns and Wedge-tailed Shearwaters ( over 200 came in after dark each night and left before dawn – but called all night) were so prolific. As there was no Activities person who was a dedicated birder there when I was there (5 – 7 March) I found my own way around over 2 days, met Gary who told me the terns which were dive bombing me were Black – naped, and got some information from Fabrice, a specialist on Manta Rays. Also saw the Silvereye, Pacific Golden Plovers in various stages of breeding plumage, numerous Crested Terns (adults and juvs), both morphs of Eastern Reef Egret, Sooty Oyster Catchers, 2 Wandering Tattlers, a Whimbrel, and the Greater and Lesser Frigatebirds. a Red-tailed Tropicbird was sitting on its nest. A great experience – it’s good to know the hot spots though. Was also told that lots of birds fly in at sunset near Coral Gardens but I missed this.
