The following sentence in a news report in today’s Melbourne Herald Sun about the proposed sale of the Port of Melbourne is surely of concern. I was aware that a second Port Phillip Bay container port proposal had been floated but understood that it was to be outside the immediate vicinity of the Western Treatment Plant shoreline (although still having the potential for significant impacts on this RAMSAR listed site). However, “between Point Wilson and Little River near Avalon airport” puts it right in the heart of key bird habitat. I suspect a reporting error….but maybe not. I guess like much else it is predicated on ever increasing consumption. Yet surveys seem to show that people are spending more of their income on services and holidays than goods, so I wonder how realistic it is? But never mind – only a few birds will be affected….. On the area of container growth, the two major drivers would be population growth, as mentioned, and economic growth in Australia, which would increase demand for products, most of which would be imported. With the government proposing (although have not heard much of it recently) a rail link to Avalon I assume that development is likely in the area anyway. I agree it is a concern – which is better – losing part of WTP or Westernport??? Always amazes me the figures they use to justify these things – it was if I recall based on a huge growth on imported containers. Since there is precious little that we do not import already (presumably in containers) then I am intrigued as to where the growth will come from – far more than is accounted for by population growth. OK – maybe it comes from other ports but they probably have similar plans….
