Birding in NZ (South Island) in March

Hi All, It seems like NZ is a topic of the month lately. I have the opportunity to go to NZ in March 2015. Is this a good time to do some birding on the South Island? If so, where do people suggest? I will have a camper so can move around “freely”. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
