The following is a digest of Sightings Reported on Birdpedia for the period Monday, January 27, 2014 to Sunday, February 2, 2014: Area: SA Location: Murray’s Lagoon, Kangaroo Island Wood Sandpiper (Tringa glareola) (4) mud, shallows, dead timber, alongside dense forest of live, flooded paperbarks, SE extremity of massive expanse of floodwater, c 1 km from usual shoreline of lagoon proper. Sharp-tailed Sandpiper (Calidris acuminata) (332) impressive concentration of birds feeding on drying mud and shallows with copious covering of waterlogged (dead) Orthrosanthus (Native Iris) tussocks, SE extremity of massive expanse of floodwater, c 1 km from usual shoreline of lagoon proper. Flock of about 30 feeding on muddy shores of NW sector Common Greenshank (Tringa nebularia) (5) Mostly along flooded E sector; one at W end. Red-kneed Dotterel (Erythrogonys cinctus) (34) 28 adults; 6 immature-made up of three broods x 2. Mostly in mud and shallows of SE sector; also 6 in NE sector; several at W end. Incredible increase in this species on brackish paperbark wetlands over past 10+ years! Australian Spotted Crake (Porzana fluminea) (11) 9 adults and 2 small chicks observed in shallows beneath dense fringing paperbarks; others heard. Low density numbers widespread around entire shoreline. Black-tailed Native-hen (Gallinula ventralis) (100s) feeding around edge of floodwaters, running into flooded paperbarks for refuge, fledged young present. Freckled Duck (Stictonetta naevosa) (3) flushed from flooded paperbarks; possibly others present, hidden away in vast epanse of flooded paperbark forests. Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) (1) immature female accidentally flushed from dying immature Black-tailed Native Hen quarry; flew around in circles above injured bird lying in shallows. Swamp Harrier (Circus approximans) (3) three uniformly dark immature birds flushed from roost in SE sector, flew around overhead. Blue-billed Duck (Oxyura australis) (100+) c 50:50 ratio of bright breeding plumaged males and females, deep open water of W sector.
