Reported by: Phil Barron on Monday, November 25, 2013 ——————————————— Date: Monday, November 25, 2013 Location: Kangaroo Island Freckled Duck (Stictonetta naevosa) (150) resting on exposed levee banks with thousand assorted waterfowl in flooded farm paddocks of Brooksby’s ‘Hawks Nest’ farm c 2 km E Murrays Lagoon, Cape Gantheaume CP, 18 November 2013. Pink-eared Duck (Malacorhynchus membranaceus) (c1000) congregated over shallow floodwaters on Brooksby’s ‘Hawks Nest’ farm; that is, extensive flooded farm paddocks bordering NE and E side of Murrays Lagoon; recent breeding confirmed by observation of recently hatched ducklings, 18 Novenber 2013. Latham’s Snipe (Gallinago hardwickii) (3) feeding/skulking about in dense grassy herbage on edge of flooded pasture, Brooksby’s ‘Hawks Nest’ farm on NE side of Murrays Lagoon, Kangaroo Island, 18 November 2013. First seen 10 November 2013 (2). Red-kneed Dotterel (Erythrogonys cinctus) (13) 10 adults and three advanced juvenile runners on edge of shallow floodwater throughout inundated paddocks of Brooksby’s ‘Hawks Nest’ farm, NE and E of Murrays Lagoon, Kangaroo Island, 18 November 2013. Rare breeding records for KI-this species definitely undergoing significant increase on KI over recent years. Whiskered Tern (Chlidonias hybrida) (100+) black-bellied breeding-plumaged birds hawking insects over flooded lagoon/paperbarks directly below Bald Hill Lookout on N edge of Murrays Lagoon, Kangaroo Island, 18 November 2013. Sharp-tailed Sandpiper (Calidris acuminata) (c50) feeding in shallow floodwater throughout inundated paddocks of Brooksby’s ‘Hawks Nest’ farm, NE and E of Murrays Lagoon, Kangaroo Island, 18 November 2013. Wood Sandpiper (Tringa glareola) (1) feeding in shallow floodwaters amongst inundated Callistemon bushes, inundated paddock on Brooksby’s ‘Hawks Nest’ farm, c 2km E of Murrays Lagoon, Kangaroo Island, 18 November 2013. Short-tailed Shearwater (Puffinus tenuirostris) (1000s) ‘wrecked’ along S coast of Kangaroo Island during November 2013-hundreds of dead birds strewn along Vivonne Bay Beach is typical of what has happened all along S coast of KI. Reported by: Chris Baxter on Monday, November 25, 2013 ——————————————— Date: Tuesday, November 26, 2013 Location: Kangaroo Island Painted Button-quail (Turnix varius) (5) adult male with four tiny chicks running behind, crossed Playford Highway several km E of West End Highway intersection, West Gosse Lands, Flinders Chase NP, Kangaroo Island, 15 November 2013. A pleasing breeding observation for a species seemingly in decline on KI over past 40 years (feral cats?) Reported by: Chris Baxter on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 ——————————————— Date: Wednesday, November 27, 2013 Location: Pub Lake, Robe. Latham’s Snipe (Gallinago hardwickii) (60) So many Latham’s Snipe to be found at Robe. On Pub Lake, adjacent to Fox Lake, they have nowhere to hide, mostly out feeding, as I watched they kept arriving in groups of 2 or 3 until eventually I had 60 in view. This morning I could find 39 in view, feeding or resting in the edges of the vegitation on Fox Lake and viewed from the Bird Hide. Plenty of Red-knee Dotterels and a few Black-fronted Dotterels along with other water birds. There has been one I have seen before but this is the first time for 2 together. Photo attached.
