Report of Asian Dowitcher at Comerong Island near Nowra, NSW

Hi all, Anyone thinking of following up the report of an Asian Dowitcher at Comerong Island might need some directions if you don’t know the area. I was there on Wednesday 20th but could find no trace of the bird. The sand flats where the waders congregate were previously accessible from Shoalhaven Heads, but earlier in the year the river mouth was opened to prevent local flooding. A significant detour is now required to get to the same spot. Heading south down the Princes Highway into Nowra, cross the Shoalhaven bridge; after passing the helicopter take the next left (Moss Street) and proceed through Terara and Numbaa. Continue heading east, noting not to bear right onto the Greenwell Point road. Take the ferry across the canal; payment of $10.00 is required in $1.00 or $2.00 coins only – note NO change is available from the ferryman. (The ferry operates from 6.00am to 9.50pm with meal breaks from 10-10.30am and 7-7.30pm). Drive for another 4.2km; at the 2nd national park sign take the left fork and you will immediately find yourself in a car park. As you look at the information board you will see to the right of the sign a path heading north. Walk along this path which will lead you to a low green gate where the path forks; take the left fork past the Little Tern sign. After walking for around 15 minutes you will see the sandflats where the waders should be. Good luck!
