The following is a digest of Sightings Reported on Birdpedia for the period Monday, November 11, 2013 to Sunday, November 17, 2013: Area: SA Location: Vivonne Bay Kangaroo Island Short-tailed Shearwater (Puffinus tenuirostris) (1) Hundreds beach washed along Vivonne Bay, 3ks, also more on 11/11/13. One dead bird on West Bay, K.I. Did not visit any other leach locations while on the island. Reported by: Heather Connolly on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 ——————————————— Date: Saturday, November 9, 2013 Location: Port Macdonell Short-tailed Shearwater (Puffinus tenuirostris) (500+) Many hundreds flying east to west along the coast,and sheltering inside the breakwater. Pacific Golden Plover (Pluvialis fulva) (10-15) On rocks at the western end of Racecourse Bay. Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres) (36) Flock at the western end of Racecourse Bay. Reported by: Nathaniel Doecke on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 ——————————————— Date: Sunday, November 10, 2013 Location: Laratinga Wetlands, Mt Barker Freckled Duck (Stictonetta naevosa) (5) At least 5 birds feeding and / or roosting on Pond 11 (see map for Reserve). Australian Spotted Crake (Porzana fluminea) (2) Feeding on exposed mud. One on Pond 9, one on Pond 8. Yellow-billed Spoonbill (Platalea flavipes) (1) Feeding on Pond 11. Little Pied Cormorant (Phalacrocorax melanoleucos) (4) Several nests but one nest with two almost fully grown chicks. Water level quite low on Ponds 9, 10 and 11. Reported by: Martyn Price on Monday, November 11, 2013 ——————————————— Date: Sunday, November 10, 2013 Location: Morphett Street, Mt Barker Collared Sparrowhawk (Accipiter cirrocephalus) (1) First spotted sitting on roof of one of the shops near Video Ezy. Flew off toward Morphett Street looking for prey and landing in one of the street trees. I followed. Flew out of tree and into a small bush, at GPS location given above, hunting for House Sparrows. Allowed me to walk right up to bush and peer inside. Could see the bird sitting motionless – did now move but kept a watchful eye on me. After several minutes I moved on leaving the bird to go about its business. Gull-billed Tern (Sterna nilotica) (3) 3 Gull-billed Terns out on the flats with hundreds of Waders. My first sighting of this species for St Vincent Gulf and Yorke Peninsular. Eastern Curlew (Numenius madagascariensis) (45) So happy to arrive at high tide and find 45 Eastern Curlew, higher than the usual numbers seen in this and nearby locations. Mind you I am still studying the photos just incase some of them turn into Whimbrel. Short-tailed Shearwater (Puffinus tenuirostris) (229) 218 birds were dead along 1km of beach. 2 birds were alive on the beach and 9 were struggling in the surf. some birds had had their heads bitten off. Australasian Gannet (Morus serrator) (4) Birds were diving about 1 km off shore. Whiskered Tern (Chlidonias hybrida) (4) This is the first time that I have observed Whiskered Terns fishing out over the surf line? Hooded Plover (Thinornis rubricollis) (1) Single bird resting above the high tide mark. It was being mobbed by several angry Silver Gulls. (Islands past first bridge on way to hide.) Whiskered Tern (Chlidonias hybrida) (200+) 200 to 300 Whiskered Terns hawking over lakeside paddocks between Milang and Kindaruar Road.
