I have received this E-mail from a supposed Richard and believe it to be fake. Other Oz birders please note: “I’m writing this with tears in my eyes, I came down to Manila, Philippines for a short vacation. Unfortunately, I was mugged at the park of the hotel where i stayed, all cash and credit card were stolen off me but luckily for me i still have my passport with me. I’ve been to the the Police here but they’re not helping issues at all and my return flight leaves in few hours from now but I’m having problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel manager won’t let me leave until I settle the bills. Well I really need your financial assistance.. Please let me know if you can help me out? Yahoo seems particularly bad Sonja – Google “yahoo email account hacked”! Seems there have even been Youtube videos showing how to do it! I ‘ve had my Yahoo account hacked, but I don’t think it’s only Yahoo, but also Hotmail, and I did hear that Gmail was also. It’s a pity that these people didn’t use their brains for something useful! On the other hand, with this particular scam, it relies on recipients replying to ask what’s wrong, and then receiving further replies telling them where to send money. I.e. the spammers need access to that mailbox for the scam to work. If the email address used is really Richard’s then there’s a good chance they’ve got the password for it. It appears that Yahoo accounts get hacked regularly. Hi, Nearly two years ago i recieved a similar email from a birding mate of mine. It too turned out to be a fake. Quite a sophisticated scam really. Apart from the first line which is such an ‘unAustralian and unmanly’ thing to admit it sounds quite reasonable.
