Dear Birders, I understand that Riflemen were moved to Tiritiri Matangi in February last year. Does anyone know if they are being seen regulalrly there now? regards Peter ============================== To unsubscribe from this mailing list, send the message: unsubscribe (in the body of the message, with no Subject line) to: birding-aus-request@vicnet.net.au

If you go there, watch out for Greg – if you’ve got sandwiches, he bites your leg… I didn’t manage to see the Riflemen last month, but they are there. Cheers,
Tony
I was on Tiritiri in 2008 and heard a wonderful story about their attempt to introduce Tomtits to the island. About 50 birds were trapped in reserves in the Auckland area and realeased on the island. They disappeared immediately, but within a few days had reappeared in the places they were trapped (they were recognised by the leg bands).
This would have involved either a 2km hop to the mainland and a laborious cross-country trip back to their home forests, or a long (30km) flight over the sea towards Auckland if they flew back in a straight line.

Hi Peter,
Just spoke to a friend Quentin Paynter in Auckland and he replies, “Hi Tom, I’ve not been to Tiri for a while, but I believe they are breeding well and are regularly seen there (but quite how easy they are to see I’m not sure)See http://www.titipounamu.net.nz/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=d94793c62aa19605b37614b6905a1ad4&topic=125.0
Hope this helps,
Tom
