Hi all,
The three (four) tern species were on the beach working between the pier and the drain pipes to the north. One common, one White-fronted and one Arctic – and lots more Crested than were on the beach on saturday. I arrived at 1030 and saw Bob Cook and we watched them until about 1130. The Arctic was on the outer of the flock and a bit nervous. The Common and White-fronted were happily in the middle of the Crested.

The Arctic Tern was at Mordialloc again this (Tuesday) morning despite the much warmer weather.
I first saw it around 1015 and it was still there (despite a walker putting it up) when I left at 1040. I was told a White-fronted was seen as well.

Following link is to photos taken of three terns when at Mordialloc with Jen Spry this morning.
I am fascinated by the “splotchy” plumage on the Arctic Tern – is this a moulting or immature stage??
Clear difference in the shoulder mark between the White-fronted (also completely white underwing) and the “probable” Common, which has the much clearer dark mark. Also difference in head markings.
I am most willing to be corrected on any interpretation.
Love the P Gull “puppy” which was persistently “playing” with the tennis ball – last picture!
