    Just to add to the good news about Broughton Island: in spring last year, Hunter Bird Observers Club started doing surveys of the non-seabirds on Broughton. The project is a collaboration with NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service and the Broughton Island Conservation Society.

    Our initial aim is to develop the baseline data that will allow future changes in bird populations to be identified. Highlights from the first year’s surveying include the first known records of Yellow-faced Honeyeater for Broughton Island (initially a single bird, became 2 pairs) and a few records of Lewin’s Rail (a species which may have been overlooked previously).

    If anyone is ever going across to Broughton Island for a holiday, you are welcome to contact me about how you can contribute to the survey effort.
