Hi all,
Les George has photographed a duck at Chinaman’s Pool, Carnarvon which he thinks may be a male Eurasian Widgeon. Unfourtunately the only photo I’ve seen the head is turned away, but otherwise it looks like a decent match to me. I’m hoping to be able to post it somewhere but waiting on permission. Hopefully some more photos too

Yes, you’d have to drive up from Perth, about twice as far as Geraldton. I did it once while staying at Geraldton. There’s fuel at the turn off to Monkey Mia. Take sandwiches.

There are no records of the Eurasian Wigeon being kept in aviculture in Australia. The following is a list of all exotic waterfowl known to have been kept in Australia – a list prepared by the Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service as part of a review of exotic species carried out around 2001.

Highly unlikely an escape as this is a remote area and bird is very flighty. BUT Carnarvon is difficult to get to by air and a very long way to drive!

Sorry to throw a wet blanket over this, but why would this not be an escaped bird? Attractive duck species are extremely commonly kept in captivity. It’s a common issue when considering rare ducks which turn up in the UK, and especially in urban or suburban locations.
Just wouldn’t want loads of people expending their hard earned cash if it turns out not to be a wild bird.
