Spotted and Spotless birding near Geelong

No, this isn’t another hybridisation post – but that is certainly an interesting ongoing discussion.

I just thought I’d mention that the Spotted and Spotless Crakes have been very easy to see at Jeringot Wetland (Belmont Common in Geelong) for the last week or so. I’ve seen up to 5 Spotted (Australian Crake to give them their correct current English name) and 2 Spotless, mostly in front of the hide, but also on a muddy bank beside Barwon Heads Road. Latham’s Snipe have been standing out on the mud on some days, and difficult to find on others.

While we’re on Spotted things, I’ve seen two Spotted Harriers on recent outings: 10th January beside school Road, near Corio Station 21st January on western side of Princes Freeway, opposite Avalon Airport. The two sites are about 8-9 Km apart so is it likely they are the same bird or pair? Or is it just a good year for Spotted Harrier?
