Keep Hunters Out of New South Wales Parks

I don’t know how much impact these petitions have, but at least it helps me feel I’m doing something!

I apologise in advance if this contravenes any Birds Aust policy, but I reckon readers and subscribers of this site are the one group of people who should have the opportunity to sign and, judging by the recent threads, there’s a number of people who are opposed to the planned action.

Cheers

Colin

Hi Colin, New South Wales is home to thousands of threatened species, such as flying foxes and the Southern brown bandicoot. Protecting these animals ought to be paramount, but now they’re in danger due to the greatest threat of all: human hunters. [6]Tell NSW that these animals don’t deserve to be exposed to this peril! » In a move to gain the Shooters and Fishers Party’s support, the state government struck a deal allowing recreational hunters access to 79 New South Wales nature reserves, national parks, and other conservation areas for pest control purposes. But their promises to supervise hunters don’t hold up. The Shooters party’s website claims that parks will not be closed when they hunt and there won’t be any close supervision by NP staff. So how, exactly, will this prevent hunters from running wild?

Without strict supervision, the resulting chaos caused by this decision could lead to irreversible damage. It endangers both the humans and animals of New South Wales.

[7]Tell Premier Barry O’Farrell to reverse this decision before the law goes into effect 27 December this year. »

Hi Chris, If the proposal is indeed for “carefully selected vermin controllers” to operate in a controlled way (ie closing areas of the park etc, supervised so that there aren’t multiple shooters parties in the same area etc) then i think it is a very different discussion. I would honestly love to be pointed to the details of this please if you have them as I would love to see the facts of it.

In terms of numbers of people dying compared to other sources – I don’t think any new way of people being killed is acceptable. One death due to a poorly constructed political manoeuvring is one death too many sorry. Especially a death that could be prevented. And i don’t care if the death is the death of a hunter or birdwatcher – they are all people. I’m sorry if that sounds emotive – it is certainly meant as honest rational query and concern.

    Cheers Dave

How about stopping all the emotive rubbish. More birders die on the road driving to their birding spots than will ever be shot be carefully selected vermin controllers. Judging by the amount of foxes and cats on the western slopes the NPWLS has not done a cull for generations and it is only the cars that are doing their bit as I counted 8 dead and 3 live foxes in 75 Km south of Cowra. Cheers Chris PS some of the best birding in the Biosphere Conservation Park (next to Gluepot) is run by the shooting fraternity.

I think helmet and flak jacket might be even better. Pity they are illegal.

I’d stick to the camouflage gear as the idiots who can’t tell a swan from a duck will not know you are there unless they bring their pig dogs. Alan

    Dave,

I would invest in some fluoro coloured camo gear. It might help, though with nearly 50% of the victims in hunting accidents in the USA wearing “safety” colours, fluoro might just make you a better target.

    Cheers,

    Carl Clifford

Thanks for sharing that link Clive!! As someone that spends a fair amount of time quietly in the bush in camouflague photographing birds I find this incredibly disturbing to say the least!

I can imagine someone letting fly into a flying fox colony for fun, but I can’t imagine many bandicoots getting shot, unless I’m mistaken about how hard they are to find.

You’d have to be spotlighting, wouldn’t you?

Indeed…perhaps they’ll import from across the Tasman to help their identification skills…

See – http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/breaking-news/nz-hunter-admits-careless-use-of-a-firearm/story-e6frf7k6-1226436670519 for the story. It includes –

“A NEW Zealand hunter who shot a man was so sure his victim was a deer he thought he could see fur before he pulled the trigger, a court has heard. ”

    Regards, Clive.

I would think they are suggesting that once people start shooting anywhere they are liable to shoot anything. I know there are responsible shooters out there, but unfortunately there are also a number (I won’t speculate as to how many) who have little or no concern about what they fire at. Recent data from the duck hunting saga, some of whom reportedly even shot Black Swans, would suggest that anything is seen as fair game by some. If you can’t tell a Black Swan from a Black Duck, I would suggest you shouldn’t even be allowed out, never mind allowed carry a fire arm.

But then again, that’s just my opinion……

and I’m not trying to start up another thread here – just thought I’d offer readers an option to contribute. Not really interested in commenting further to be honest, as I only get a little excited and, at my age, that’s detrimental to my mental capacity…….

    Cheers

    Colin

As we all know, duck hunters (at least in Vic) have a list of species they can shoot and a bag limit, and as we all know they are very restrained, make sure they are aiming at the right species and stop as soon as they have reached the bag limit.

I am sure our NSW friends will be just as restrained!

I’m not in favour of hunting in national parks, but are they suggesting people will shoot flying foxes and bandicoots? Or are they talking about indirect effects?
