Speckled warbler?

A friend living in Victoria photographed this bird, I think at Werribee. Could a Birding Aus chatliner identify it please?

The photographs are at http://flic.kr/p/buUgp8 >> http://flic.kr/p/buUgAT >> >> Regards

Denise, I have never posted to this listserve before so if this does not go through, please pass it on.

Thank you all for the help regarding the id of what it seems was most probably a Rufus Whistler. It was amongst Striated Thornbills. I used the wording “all around me” when to exact, they were more above me. There are a whole group of shots of Striated beginning with this one http://flic.kr/p/bzJZ8H all from Black Hill Reserve in Kyneton, VIC where these sightings took place.

The size of the bird in question was possibly a problem. As I said, it landed above me and I snapped a few quick photos before it flitted off. Size-wise it was small. In the moment, and viewed through the viewfinder, it seemed about the size of the thornbills, but in retrospect… it could have been and probably was, a bit larger.

Thank you again Denise and all y’all! Cheers, R. Bruce Richardson ===============================

Hi Mike I’d agree except that my friend saw it with a flock of thornbills and concluded it was of a similar size. Denise

I’m also wondering about the statement about “Striated Thornbills all around me”. Does that sound likely? I thought they normally stayed up high.

Hi Denise, Yes I noted that, but it is still a Rufous Whistler – youngish whistlers can be rather on the small side, but certainly appreciably larger than a thornbill of any description. But I have no doubt it IS a Rufous Whistler, albeit a smallish & heavily marked individual. Rufous Whistler would also be my suggestion.

    Hi Martin

I wondered about Rufous Whistler, a bird I know well. But my friend said it was about the same size as the thornbills it was with. Kind regards

Hi Denise I would say that bird is a young & heavily-marked Rufous Whistler. Cheers Martin Cachard Cairns 0428 782 808
