A “smallish Great Knot with some Red Knot breeding plumage” was caught on Roebuck Bay on 6th March. We tried to turn it into a rarity, but all evidence pointed to it being a hybrid. Photos were taken. It was fully measured and a blood sample was taken for analysis. None of the team have heard of a Great / Red Knot hybrid previously (including overseas members from the Netherlands, UK, USA, China). It would be hard to pick in a flock and so could very easily be overlooked. As it had partial breeding plumage, it has to be a bird in at least its second year.
