Dear All,
I watched the first episode of the BBC series Earthflight, which looks at the worlds birdlife, on the 9 network this evening. I seems that it will be a great series, and has has received considerable plaudits in the UK. The original version has the mellifluous Scots burr of David Tennant as the voice-over. Unfortunately, the 9 network, in its wisdom, has decided to replace Mr Tennant’s voice-over with a rather wooden Australian voice-over. I highly recommend the series, but I don’t think I will be watching any further episodes. Instead, I will be buying the DVD, and watch it as it was meant to be.
Cheers,

Tony,
I tried to speak to Brian Feeney, of Programing at Channel Nine in Sydney, but was redirected to his voicemail. I left my comments re the switch on his vm. I think I may follow up with an email, as well. I have, BTW, emailed David Tennant and had a grump at him over the switch.
When speaking to another person at Ch. 9, it emerged that Ch. 9 has made some “cuts” to the original program. If anyone wishes to see the “real” program, I suggest that they buy the DVD. The DVD is available in the UK, but only for region 2, so if you want to play it here you will need a multi-region DVD player. If you don’t have a multi-region DVD player, ask a nerdy teenager if they could hack your existing player. You could always watch it on your computer. If your computer is locked into only playing DVDs from our region, I would suggest downloading the program VLC. It is free and will play just about any thing.
Cheers,
Carl Clifford

Greg,
We Australians have the reputation of being the most difficult anglophones for a non-native Anglophones to understand. The most common complaint I have heard, is that we speak too quickly and “use strange words”. It is useful though, one can have a private conversation with a fellow Australian in the midst of non-Australian Anglophones.
As for Taggart, do ye no ken tha’ they are no speakin’ sassenach, but Scots?
Cheers,
Carl Clifford
Whenever I watch the Scottish TV series ‘Taggart’ I usually miss the plot because of the broad accents of the actors. I need an interpreter. Many year’s ago I was speaking on the ‘phone to a French speaking person from New Caledonia. He asked me to speak more slowly as he was having difficulty understanding me due to my Australian accent. Australian accent!!!!! what rot, I don’t have an accent!!!!

I wonder which twit in Channel 9 decided to change the voice over and why.
Tony
I watched the show and found the narrative a bit lack lustre.
I have been trying to I.D the shorebirds that where feeding on the eggs being layed in the sand by the gudgeon while the Brown Pelicans fed on the fish in the surf. Anybody know? I think one of the Dowitcher species?

Yep…spoiled it for me too. “Wooden” is a good word to describe Charles Woolley’s voice. I usually just call it annoying. I had the sound turned down for a while. I hadn’t thought of just waiting for the DVD. Thanks. Steve Murray ________________________________________ Sent: Thursday, 16 February 2012 8:26 PM

I’ve never really understood this redubbing business – it’s not as if most accents are that difficult to understand. There’s an Australian kids’ show, Dirtgirl World, which has Australian birdcalls, wildlife and would be pretty hard to mistake as being set anywhere else, but in the UK, they pointlessly dub it over. I mean, it’s not like Australian accents are hard to understand (and imagine the horror of having to be a voice-over artist for Home and Away…) and likewise, most other Anglophone accents aren’t that bad. Unless you’re from Birmingham. Cheers,
Tony
