There is some good news this week. The bridge across one of the creeks on Ash Island (~10km west of Newcastle NSW) is finally completed and it is now possible to access the main pond areas by car. It has been a saga of more than 2 years during which access to Ash Island has been severely restricted. Birders can now resume visiting this previous mecca of interesting sightings.
There were >1600 Sharp-tailed Sandpipers present on Ash Island a few days ago, and small numbers of several other waders. No sign of any Yellow Wagtails but they seem to be a late summer visitor usually.
