Our annual koel has finally arrived in our patch of Schofields (NW Sydney) long after we decided it must have died or gone elsewhere.
Which raises a question or two:
1. Do koels return to the same area annually — I presume so, as we’ve always had a pair arriving Sept/October.
2. Do they normally return to the same tree each year? Ours seem to, though this one is not in the usual tree yet.

I once had a regular koel who resided in my neighbour’s lemon tree without fail each year. One day his incessant koelling stopped and the silence was so profound that I investigated. I found a pile of koel feathers (presume fox) and the rest of the summer was very quiet. The following year that same lemon tree was inhabited by a new koel. Perhaps it was the female who remained loyal to the site and brought her new partner? Perhaps it was a bird born & raised in that patch who had the genetic map for “Lemon Tree, Taylor Road, Woodford”. I still ponder the question – why the lemon tree?
