Tasmanian Mammals

G’day everyone,

I will be heading to Tassie in Dec/Jan and was hoping to get some help on where I can see some non bird wildlife.

I will be staying in Launceston for 2 days, and I’m wondering if anyone knows of any places where I can see Wombats, Quolls and Devils relatively close to Launceston or within an hours drive away.

    Hi Mark,

January 2008 we had 1 Devil at Lake St Claire and 6 Devils around Cradle Mountain – hope there are still a few left in the area. Eastern Quolls were around in the same areas.

    Cheers,

    Nikolas

Mark et al, Wombats are easy at Narawntapu National Park – between Devonport and Launceston. Always around the open plains near the Ranger’s station, day and night. Quolls are generally pretty easy at Cradle Mountain , but that’s not really within an hour of Launceston. Not really sure of anything closer. Devils are highly unlikely close to Launceston, apart from wildlife parks. Facial Tumour Disease has devastated populations in all but the far northwest.

    Hope that’s helpful.

    Cheers, John Tongue, Ulverstone, Tas.
