On Thursday Peter and Bev Morgan observed an adult female Australian Shelduck at Swan Creek, near Grafton, NSW. This may not be of much interest to southerners who probably see this species regularly but it is very rare on the NSW North Coast. I know of only two other records in recent years. If anyone wants to see the bird they could contact me off-list for directions. A nesting pair of Black-necked (Satin) Storks is on a nearby wetland and the variety and abundance of other duck species, as well as hundreds of Black-winged Stilts, many juveniles or immatures, is quite unlike the situation a few months ago when all the waterbirds went west chasing the abundant water to breed. The Shelduck was still present late yesterday afternoon when Warren Thompson, Val and I observed and photographed it.
