Hi all, I posted this to ozbirdpix this morning and wondered how birding-aus members felt about it ?

Subject: [ozbirdpix] What has happened ?
When Ozbirdpix started up in 2003/04 there were a number of bird image contributors who posted some absolutely marvellous pictures of birds, and over the years I developed quite a large gallery of wonderful shots of all sorts of birds.
However, in recent times these beautiful contributions seem have dwindled to pretty much a standstill, and I find this to be a great loss.
In order to confirm my thoughts I had a look at the ozbirdpix website ( ozbirdpix@yahoogroups.com ) and found a table of contributions from 2003 thru to the present time. As can be seen from that table the activity level has in fact just about ceased. I find this very disappointing and would like to ask as to why this might have happened? I can’t believe that people have run out of birds to photograph. Have some other problems arisen which have remained unresolved and if so what could now be done to overcome them and get the pictures flowing again?
I have never been a picture contributor myself as I don’t consider anything I’ve ever produced to be good enough for publication, but I have really enjoyed the work of others in the past and miss the beautiful pictures people have posted . It would be really wonderful if things could be got going again – please.

Dave – funnily enough my experience was totally different, in that Ozbirdpix seemed to be a bunch of dedicated birders interested in birds and their ecology first and photographs second.
The other “photo outlets” I have found a bit censorious (eg, post the scientific name or don’t post at all) and probably more interest in “the shot” rather than the birds. But as always, your mileage may vary. Either way, I’d like to see less “Art Morris” and more birds in their environment!

Hi Tony, As someone who used to contribute to Ozbirdpix i agree with what Sonja said. Ozbirdpix just didn’t attract enough active members and for me there are so many better outlets to share and communicate with like-minded people. Obviously i am involved in Feathers and Photos which suits my needs perfectly. Bird-O is another great outlet for sharing not just images too, and there are plenty more forums that are already established and great. I personally didn’t find the Ozbirdpix system very user friendly for what it was trying to achieve. There is now simply too much competition.

Hi Tony,
My guess is that there is too much competition as the number of places where people can post their bird photos has increased a lot.
Personally I contribute to the BOCA photogallery (which I help moderate), the MELBOCA site (particularly the photography group page which I manage), PBase galleries and just recently the Australian forum FeathersandPhotos. There are others out there, including personal websites and blogs so all you need to do is check out a few places to see beautiful bird photos.
