Here’s some data re greater Melb records of Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo (see below) since 1990 to the present day (sourced from Birdline/BOCA /Eremaea and a few others). It’s simple report data, and it obviously needs some analysis to fully understand it. However, with this information in mind, I think Peter’s comments were fairly succinct. Looking at the data below, here’s my take on it.
It’s apparent that reports of YTBC have been increasing consistently over the last 10 years. This may be due to a number of factors such as an increased reporting rates (for example it got to the point where I asked people not to report YTBC sightings to Birdline), greater access to Pinus radiata in urban spaces (although I’m not sure how this would have changed significantly in recent times?), bush fires pushing some birds into the city due to loss of food resources, and of course YTBC are fond of eating the seeds of Casuarina, Eucalyptus, Acacia, Banksia and Hakea, as well as the larvae of tree-boring beetles and moths, so the re-establishment of local bushland in suburban Melbourne has certainly had an effect. Recently I saw a flock of nearly 200 birds feeding in re-established eucalyptus bushland at Yarra Bend. For the record, the City of Melbourne has approximately 25,000 native and 25,000 exotic trees. Interestingly Sean Dooley discussed this very issue last night on Derek Gilles ABC 774 radio show. Sean raised the point that although YTBC have moved into urban spaces due to food availability, however there may be insufficient access to nesting sites. So it’s possible that the current urban YTBC are fated to disappear once these (long lived) birds die out.
Indecently Sean also discussed the place that introduced birds – such as the Common Myna – play in our urban spaces. An interesting discussion, something featured in the new Wingspan (which got a plug from Derek Gilles). Without wanting to put words in Sean’s mouth, he essentially argued against the notion that inner urban landscapes are ‘natural wildernesses’, and perhaps there is room for birds such as the Common Myna in our cities. I’m o.k. with that.
The other day I listed the most common birds that I see in my unban (Northcote) backyard. Only a few were really natural, although the majority were native – something very different from just a few years ago. The most common birds in my backyard are (in no real order) Noisy Minor, Crested Pigeon, Spotted Turtle-Dove, Rock Dove, Common Myna, Australian Magpie, Rainbow and Musk Lorikeet, Silver Gull (there’s a pool and park next door), Masked Lapwing (pool), Red-rumped Parrot, White-plumed Honeyeater, Red Wattlebird, Starling, Grey Butcherbird (for example heard nearly every day), Common Blackbird, House Sparrow, Pied Currawong, Willie Wagtail, Welcome Swallow, Magpie Lark, Little Raven and Pacific Black Duck (pool). Of those only 6 are introduced, while the rest (17) are ‘native’. Of the native species I’d say at least 4 or 5 do not ‘naturally’ occur in the region, such as Rainbow Lorikeet. However they are all now a standard ornithological feature of inner Melbourne. Compare this to 20 years ago (perhaps more) and it would have been a totally different urban landscape. The only birds I would have seen would have been lost of Starlings, Sparrows and Rock Doves.
