Common koel sighting?

Hi all,

My 17 year old son, who is better at identifying birds than I am, told me he just saw a male common koel on the branch outside his window. He says it definitely was not a white-winged chough. And it flew off before my wife or I could get there.

We live in NW Sydney.

As best I can figure from Eremaea Birds, there has been the odd sighting of koels in June in NSW.

I know that a migrant rarely will not migrate.

Does this make sense, and how likely is it?

Thanks and take care Gordon Cain Schofields, NW Sydney

Could it have been a Spangled Drongo? This species is likely to be in Sydney at this time of the year.

I’ve had good views of a over-wintering koel in the Blue Mountains (in July 1985) but its surpising how few reports there are of over-wintering koels around Sydney – might not be even one per year, even with much increased numbers of koels & more observers. Of course, silent koels are not the most conspicuous of birds.

One bird that turns up at this time of year that Gordon’s son might have possible confused for a koel from a poor view is Spangled Drongo.

Hi Gordon, in E S Hoskin The Birds of Sydney which covers the period 1770-1989 as the latest departure date as 21-4-1973. There is a later date August 8th but as the earliest arrival date for this species is18th August the 8th of August record could also be a early arrival.
