Hi all,
Actually the three NZSPs seen last year off NSW neither called nor sang 😉
Just want to mention that all three sightings have been reported to BARC, but to my knowledge the decision on all three is still pending.
Port Stephens (Richard Baxter) Ulladulla (Dan Mantle, Rob Hynson, Nikolas Haass, Raja Stephenson)
Wollongong (Nikolas Haass)
There was a long discussion especially with regards to underwing pattern and head shape of the Ulladulla bird.
Raja’s photos of the Ulladulla and the Wollongong bird plus some from Hauraki are here:

Sorry, I also meant to say that I always count “heard” bird calls in the field, so long as there is no doubt of the species – to me, it’s the same as counting a “seen” bird in the field when there’s no doubt about what it is.

Hi Nikolas, Allan & others,
I was on-board for the Port Stephens NZSP record, & also for the NZSP record off Wollongong the following month.
As far as I’m concerned, for my own personal records, I have it in my mind that I’ve seen 2 NZSP’s even though neither were clearly that species to me at the immediate time of observation. Due to some great photographic skills of others on-board both boats, we were able to conclude that both sightings were indeed very likely NZSP’s.
So, rightly or wrongly, my personal records reflect that I’ve been lucky enough to see one NZSP off Port Stephens (already BARC accepted), & quite probably another off Wollongong, if it is accepted by BARC.
Whether I saw & could conclude their specific ID in any immediacy at the time of observation doesn’t really matter to me – I saw them & I am very grateful for it….
I’m just very glad that we looked at the photos very closely afterwards….
Cheers
