Hello Birders,
A few notes from a couple of hours I spent at Anstead Bushland Reserve in SW Brisbane yesterday morning.
Perhaps the most common bird in the reserve at the moment is Scarlet Honeyeater, seemingly in response to the flowering Spotted Gums. The musical calls of the males and the contact calls from males, females and young birds can be heard all over the place. There are also quite a few Little Lorikeets around, along with many Scaly-breasted and a few Rainbow Lorikeets.
There was a group of 21 Apostlebirds seen in the SW corner of the reserve, the largest group I have seen in the area. Other interesting sightings included the usual Speckled Warblers, and a covey of Brown Quail which were continuously leaping vertically into the air apparently grabbing insects from a couple of feet above the ground.
Other sightings from around the area include a pair of Pacific Bazas calling as they flew over on Monday, and a pair of Bush Stone-Curlews that have succesfully raised two youngsters along Sugars Rd.
