Channel Ten Sydney today broadcast a documentary called “Shorebirds – Frequent Flyers”.
“Migratory birds are one of the many wonders of nature, perfectly designed for long distance travel. This fascinating documentary looks at wetland habitats around Australia.”
I did not notice that it was on until too late. It was an odd time, 1 pm on a Saturday. More the sort of thing you expect on ABC on a Sunday night.
How did this slip under the BirdingAus radar and does anyone know if it is likely to be repeated?

Hang on, with hindsight, that wouldn’t have been Port of Brisbane where the Moreton Bay section was filmed: there were boat masts passing in the background, and there was a credit to the Manly Yacht club, so it would have been the Manly shorebird roost, another artificially-created wetland and roost. It wasn’t named in the programme.
Sorry to mislead.

I got a frantic call from Canberra, “Quick, Jillie, turn on Channel 10 right now!” Nothing on channel 10 of interest. But we are in Queensland, and therefore had a reprieve (last day of daylight saving for other states in the east). It was broadcast at 4pm here, and I agree, it was an excellent programme, targetting an audience which knows nothing about shorebirds. It ran for an hour. It covered more than migratory shorebirds, and included a section on Richard Kingsford’s work with waterbirds and wetlands, nomadism in waterbirds, with quite a good length on Kakadu waterbirds. It included a section on cannon netting in Broome, and Clive Minton gave reasons why they flag birds – what information they seek and for what purpose. Chris Hassall was shown there explaining a little about wing moult. There was also a good piece done at Port of Brisbane, where Qld Wader Study Group does monthly surveys. This is an extremely important artificially-created land reclamation, where shorebirds are really taken care of in the planning. Andrew Geering (chair of QWSG) gave a good rundown on the birds they were viewing. There was emphasis on ‘do not disturb the birds’ and reasons given for the advice.
Whilst a specialist shorebirder could find little faults, the general public were given very good information, and I applaud the work.
