Looks like, we can soon add either Echidna and Platypus to our bird lists or Emu and Cassowary to our mammal lists!

A a slightly younger pom, I suspect my secondary source for the report being shown on Panorama is better than your memory: http://news.bbc.co.uk/panorama/hi/front_page/newsid_7753000/7753038.stm. Of course, Alan Whicker might well have recycled the material

Of course not, shame on you sirrah for even suggesting such a thing. But I wont parrot on as no-one probably gives a fig, aye.

Thanks Kevin, but as a pre-Baby-Boomer Pom I share the reservations of others on the WWW about the attribution of the Spaghetti Tree to Panorama, even though BBC websites say that is where it appeared in 1957).
My clear memory is of seeing it on a report by Alan Whicker on the Beeb’s ‘Tonight’.
And yes! This thread has to do with birding – it’s about gullibility [I wonder what that word has to do with gulls?].
As a classic case of gullibility, see the case of the ‘Hastings Rarities’. Of course nothing like that could happen these days – could it?

The obligatory Wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spaghetti_tree_hoax
… and the video:

I fear the Spaghetti Tree joke wasn’t Australian at all: it was broadcast on Panorama by Auntie’s Auntie, the BBC, in 1957. Spaghetti was possibly more exotic in 1950s Britain!

Yes!! Those were the days! The folk at Auntie had lots of fun then. Also the time of the TDT worm. A far superior creature to more recent the political debate version. Wendy
One of the most celebrated Australian April Fool’s jokes was on This Day Tonight, which came on at 7:30 pm.
It showed spaghetti growing on trees in the Po Valley (mind you it would still have been the morning in Italy at that time).

That’s certainly how it was in my primary school days (the 1930s!).
Cheers

I thought the Standing Orders for April Fool jokes was, that if you pulled on after mid-day on the 1st of April, you were designated the April Fool. At least it was when I went to school, last century.

Hi all,
I got a few off-line questions about the link that did not work. Indeed the link did not work because it was fake, and also the title of the “paper” was completely made up. Here the “authors” of the “paper”:
Abbott(‘s) B(ooby) Peale(‘s) S(torm-)P(etrel) (Pealeornis and Pealea)) Ross(‘s) G(ull) Ipswich S(parrow) Lewin(‘s) H(oney)E(ater)
Forster(‘s) T(ern) Olrog(‘s) G(ull) Oustalet(‘s) S(unbird) Levaillant(‘s) W(oodpecker)
Read the “authors’ last names’” initials from top to bottom 😉
Sorry for the late silliness – but it was still within one hour of the silly date (Fri Apr 01 22:53:17 2011)!
Cheers,
Nikolas
