Magpie swooping advice

Hi brains trust, Bill here

My sister is a crossing guard at a primary school in the mornings in Melbourne.

She’s just moved to a new crossing, and apparently there’s a very swoopy Magpie there that terrorises the kids in Soring.

Swooping season is coming up and my sister was wondering if it might be worth trying to make friends with the Magpie.

She’s proposing putting a plate of worms from her worm farm each morning of the next school holidays in an attempt to get the local Magpies to recognise her as “not a threat”.

Do people think this might work? It sounds a possibility to me.

Michelmaus Cay advice

Hi there…
Hoping to go to Michelmaus Cay off Cairns in the next week or two if possible…
– Just wondering is it worth it?
– Are there any good seabirds on the sand spit? Is it the right time of year?
– What’s the best way to get there/cheapest tour option as we don’t have our own boat??

Michaelmas Cay advice

I went with Seastar Cruises in September 2017. They go to the cay for snorkelling. You have to ask the skipper to have someone take you around the cay in a small boat to view what birds are there. I’d check with them direct about the current arrangement.

Meldum geese

In the latest issue of Birdlife, birds from an ancient Egyptian frieze are described as "quite unlike any species known today", but they are almost perfect pictures of Red-breasted Geese.

Brown Honeyeater

Brown Honeyeater

Clear sighting of a flock of 8 brown Honeyeaters seen very clearly outside my kitchen window feeding on banksia flowers. I live in Don Valley, Launching Place, Victoria. According to the distribution map for this bird we are way to far south to have the Brown Honeyeater as a visitor. First time I have seen this bird, let alone this far south of its range but absolutely certain of identification. Has any one else seen them this far south? Are they a product of climate change shift in distribution?

Sea Eagle double catch

A friend of mine was yesterday at Garie Beach, Royal NP, south of Sydney.

 

He watched a Sea Eagle fly off a cliff, hit the water, and emerge with two fish. ‘Either two fish, or a fish with two tails!’

 

Has anyone seen or heard of such a sight before?

 

He’s not a birder, but he’s reliable nonetheless.
