For over a decade two friends have battled illegal land clearing and
shooting on a large property they bought for conservation purposes near
Lithgow in NSW. It has been a very sorry saga with no small amount of
official malfeasance in a region made famous for this through Eddie Obeid
and Ian McDonald. Much of their struggle has been documented as part of a
new movie about Australia’s schizophrenic relationship with its national
icon – the kangaroo. You can get a taste from the website

In 1984, Chris R. Sonter of Mildura, K. Joe Mack of Waikerie and Peter
Schramm (Senior) of Barmera published an article in the Australian Bird

Hi folks
Domestic authorities require a sacrifice to pay for a couple if trips I have planned this year.
I have Volumes 1A, 1B and 2 of HANZAB for sale if anyone is interested. Offers around $600 (excluding postage). Ideally Melbourne or Ballarat area pick up (or I can drop off). They are heavy – about 6kgs all up.

Another report: this time about 20-40 WTNT at Broke Rd, Pokolbin, Hunter
Valley (corner of Broke Rd and Wine Country Drive): 32, 46, 33S, 151, 20,
23E).
Very low: some circling <10m above the ground.
Didn’t hang around to watch: there was a big bottle of shiraz looking for
me…

Some years ago a number of birding-aus correspondents (you know who you are)
colluded to develop a reasonably accurate bird list and some routes for the
district around Lake Cargelligo. Yesterday the Lachlan Shire Council sent me
this link. There is still some work to do but here is another LGA trying its
best to showcase its birds.

Lake Cargelligo Bird Route Website Now Live
Lachlan Shire Council is pleased to advise that a new website
Birdwatchers (also known as twitchers) are a niche market for the Lachlan
Shire with Lake Cargelligo in particular, a popular destination for bird
watchers.
This new website promotes several bird routes in the Lake Cargelligo area
and aims to increase interest and visitation to the area by assisting
visitors in identifying various bird species during their stay.
The Lachlan Shire is home to approximately 230 bird species with 170 of
these species living here on a permanent basis. The remaining 60 species
visit on annual migrations, to breed or in response to seasonal changes.
The main factors which contribute to the Lachlan Shire being a great birding
destination include the many state forests, native reserves, extensive
travelling stock route, large areas of intact native vegetation and the
Lachlan River.
Lachlan Shire Council is confident the new website
interest to the area and result in additional trips to the region and
overnight stays.
Already many bird groups and clubs make annual trips to Lachlan injecting
much needed visitor dollars into the local economy by purchasing supplies on
arrival and supporting local business during their stay.
“Birdwatching in the Lachlan Shire has enormous potential and Council is
looking forward to facilitating growth in the year ahead” said Tourism
Officer Amy Strudwick.
