Anthea, Try looking at the MODIS website. They have satellite images of Lake Eyre. When I was working in the area, I found their images really useful to get up to date information on water coverage and vegetation condition (through NDVI). Sorry I don’t have a direct link anymore. Looks like the Ionospheric Prediction Service (IPS) may be on the list for budget cuts. The IPS is a valuable resource for Australians. It does not just send you alerts so you can see those pretty aurorae. The IPS service that is most valuable for Australians, is to provide information on ionospheric conditions, so that shortwave radio telephone users can select the most suitable frequency for various times of day. Shortwave radio telephony is still an important communications resource for many who live and work in inland Australia, not to mention birders. Sat phones are good, but they are not a replacement for SWRT. It would be sad to see the IPS disappear due to budget cuts. David Webb has sent me photos of a Peregrine Falcon that he and his friend Keith Hutton saw when following up reports of a Grey Falcon at Barrenbox Swamp, near Griffith, NSW on 18 March 2010. It is an adult Siberian Peregrine race calidus. Note that is four years ago but I think this record is of such significance it deserves some attention especially as it appears that this bird was initially, but not unreasonably, reported as a Grey Falcon. The Siberian Peregrine in adult plumage is a very distinctive taxon and is a long distance migrant that has previously been seen on Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands and there are several records from Ashmore Reef. This however, is the first from mainland Australia proper although there is reason to suspect that they have occurred in the Kimberley. Hi Birders, In April I enjoyed a few days in Pondicherry, southern-east India. While travelling the local countryside I saw this raptor and managed to get a few shots of it before we passed and it flew away We were in fairly dry scrubby environment though there was a large lake nearby My first thought was a Kite, but the flying shot seems to show white on the upper wing and there appears to be a hint of white rump. Maybe it’s a harrier. I’m stumped, probably because I have been studying it far too closely, far too long Can anybody offer some suggestion please?
