Hi all I need a couple of field guides to NZ birds for a short visit I’m planning to Dunedin in Feb. Any suggestions? I would like something of the standard of Simpson & Day, and maybe something for the seabirds. For the seabirds it’s hard to go past Onley and Schofield’s Albatrosses, Petrels and Shearwaters of the World. It’s a beautiful book and quite comprehensive (though no doubt already out of date as is the way with taxonomy these days). http://www.fishpond.com.au/Books/Albatrosses-Petrels-and-Shearwaters-of-World-Derek-Onley-Paul-Scofield/9780713643329 Also I have vouch for the hand guide being well worth it. Not a huge fan of photographic guides personally. THat is good – the big one is not exactly practical to carry around! On 13 January 2015 at 12:54, John Graff < jgraff2@hotmail.com> wrote:

There is a big version and a smaller “hand guide” version, the hand guide has less detailed text but same illustrations J. Sent from my iPhone

There are now two photographic guides to NZ — Fitter 2011 and Scofield 2013. I have not used either, but have heard good things about both. Eric Jeffrey Falls Church, VA USA Sent from my iPhone

Certainly a good guide, although the edition I have is nearly as big as Pizzey and probably has half as many birds in it! On 13 January 2015 at 12:14, Martin Butterfield < martinflab@gmail.com> wrote:

My understanding is that “Field Guide to the birds of New Zealand” by Barrie Heather, Hugh Robertson and Derek Onley is about the only game in town. If you want to see the Royal Albatross I believe the boat cruise from the city is a lot better value than going out to the visitors centre (the drive out is pretty spectacular and so are the charges). Hi Janine, Apart from field guides, it is worth having a look at which was developed as a collaborative effort between Te Papa, Birds New Zealand and DOC. Sonja
