I will be in Vancouver for a couple of days early June before taking the Inside Passage cruise. Does anyone know of any good birding places to visit in Vancouver and accommodation handy to such places. In fact any info on birders or birds in the area would be very helpful. Hi Don If you have a car, George Reifel Bird Sanctuary is about an hour drive south of Vancouver CBD (via Ladner) http://www.reifelbirdsanctuary.com Also check out Iona Island (just north of the airport) and Jericho Beach Park (west of the CBD on the way to UBC) Cheers, Ian Smissen _______________________________________________ Birding-Aus mailing list Birding-Aus@birding-aus.org To change settings or unsubscribe visit: http://birding-aus.org/mailman/listinfo/birding-aus_birding-aus.org
Hi Don, The first thing to say is: Stanley Park, Stanley Park and Stanley Park! A wonderful location within easy walking distance of downtown Vancouver. This park has open lawn, wooded areas, a couple of lakes and coastal and beach habitat. As a bonus, there are usually a couple of Bald Eagles in the park. Check the corvids closely here as Vancouver is part of the area where American Crow and Northwestern Crow overlap (a subject that often causes controversy amongst local birders). Plenty of other of the more common species can be found here, including waterfowl, grebes, gulls and loons. Also try one of the wooded areas not too far from Vancouver – Cypress Provincial Park or Lynn Canyon, for example. A little closer would be the Capilano Suspension Bridge park (not quite so good birdwise, but a good chance for common woodland birds). Take a look at: http://www.naturevancouver.ca/Birding_Birding_Sites for a good selection of sites reasonably close to town. Vancouver is a big, modern city with plenty of hotel accommodation. Try http://www.booking.com for some choices. We stayed with friends, so I have no real experience of the hotels, but I cannot imagine that you’d have any difficulty finding accommodation to suit almost any budget using that website or other similar accommodation websites.
