Silver Gull with protuberance from lower mandible

I have a couple of photos of a Silver Gull taken on The Strand in Townsville recently which has a protuberance from its lower mandible. Does anyone know what it could be? I was interested to note that, despite this malformity, this gull was the dominant bird in the flock. He stood next to my table most of the time it took me to eat my fish burger, and would chase away any other gulls that came too close.
