post-Yasi birds

The Metallic starlings are back in the big eucalypt at the top of our road and are starting their colony afresh! Their tree was stripped and a bit knocked about by TC Yasi and has now enough leaves for them to start working on their nests.

Also the first small flock of Pied imperial pigeons went past this morning, have only seen one or two birds recently. There’s not much on Dunk Island for them to go to right now. The winter migrant Pied currawong pair like the beach, hanging out in what’s left of the dune vegetation, as well as investigating forest edges. We’re in Wongaling Beach, so our area got well Yasi’d. Birds seem to have recovered well.
