Nice birds in flooded grassland around the Maroochy River on the Sunshine Coast over the past couple of days include two Australian Painted Snipe, between 160 and 200 Red-kneed Dotterel (a very large number for this species in south-east Queensland), 100 Pacific Golden Plover, 20 Latham’s Snipe and Spotless Crake.
These latest sightings add to an impressive list of birds from this area including Eastern Grass Owl, Lewin’s Rail, Red-backed Buttonquail and King Quail. Yet the wetlands and grasslands are under threat from real estate development. The Sunshine Coast Regional Council is being urged to purchase a property which includes some of the prime habitat.
