Birdlife International Taxonomy List Update

Birdlife International (HWB) has recently updated their list (now Version 9), I have been slowly working through the list. I’m only a short way into the passerines. Of interest so far

a) Non-passarines remain substantially unchanged from Version 8 b) Passerines have been completely reordered. c) some of the changes that effect Australia are – . . . → Read More: Birdlife International Taxonomy List Update

Field guide (or Android app) for India/Nepal

Any recommendation for central/northern India and Nepal? I have the 2003 Grimmett/Inskio “Birds of Northern India” – I will also be going into NW Maharashtra (Tadoba NP) and that is not covered by the book. Thanks Dave

Sacred Kingfisher, Fitzroy Gardens, Melbourne

There was a Sacred Kingfisher calling loudly from an Elm in the Fitzroy Gardens at about 7:15 this morning. I wasn’t able to spot the bird itself, though.

They turn up here once every few years, although they more normally hang around the pond near the JFK memorial in the Treasury Gardens across the road.

Biak did well from the New Guinea region, with Biak Hooded Pitta, Biak Myzomela, Geelvink Cicadabird, Biak Fantail and the resurrection of Biak Gerygone, originally lumped by BirdLife but now reinstated. Bougainville gets two more with Bougainville Fantail and . . . → Read More: Splits again

‘Bassian’ species

Further to Andrew Bell’s post re. ‘Bassian’ the following is my explanation to a couple of people who asked me directly:

I have used the term ‘Bassian’ to refer to the bio-geographical region of that name which overlaps another bio-geographical region ‘the Torresian region’ in north-east New South Wales and south-east Queensland. This overlap forms . . . → Read More: ‘Bassian’ species

New splits for Oz birds

A few more from the HBW/BirdLife Passerines Checklist:

Kimberley Flyrobin *Microeca tormenti* White-bellied Crimson Finch *Neochmia evangelinae*

I revised and added some 8 species to my New Guinea Checklist too, Bougainville White-eye and Bougainville Fantail both anticipated, and Biak gets Biak Hooded Pitta, Biak Myzomela, Geelvink Cicadabird and Biak Fantail, though I was surprised they . . . → Read More: New splits for Oz birds

RFI CAPERTEE VALLEY

Dear Birders,

I am spending Christmas with some friends near Capertee, and would very much like to see a Plum-headed Finch as my last tick for 2016.

Does anyone have a recent sighting (or a report of one) in the Capertee area and, if so, where.

All help gratefully received…

Thanks

Andrew Wood (Sydney)

Waterbirds returning?

I visited Mallacoota Water Treatment Plant this afternoon and while numbers and diversity of waterbirds are not back to those evident a year ago they are a lot better than in October. Many Chestnut Teal (and lesser nubers of Grey Teal). 72 Pacific Black Duck including 7 recently fledged; 19 Black Swans including 6 cygnets. . . . → Read More: Waterbirds returning?

Could the McLarens who came birding with me about 1996 please contact me? I’ve a photo of you with my Kunwinjku relatives that I wish to use in a presentation on birders at CAUTHE 2017?

Thanks
