By Birding-Aus, on January 2nd, 2017 Another major blank is the roosting behaviour of paradisaeids, all I can unearth is here: Roosting behaviour of the family is also very little-known and primarily anecdotal or incidental observation based, though finding roosting birds in the dense forest habitat is very difficult. It is reported that male Wallace’s Standardwings will roost above their leks, . . . → Read More: Roosting behaviour of birds of Paradise
By Birding-Aus, on January 2nd, 2017 Working through some introduction material for this family for a forthcoming book about Birds of Paradise and Bowerbirds, it appears that predation on members of this family is remarkably little-known. Over 25 years living and visiting New Guinea and 20 odd years living amongst Victoria’s Riflebirds, I have never seen any predation or found evidence . . . → Read More: Predation on Birds of Paradise
By Birding-Aus, on January 1st, 2017 Dear Birders,
Happy New Year!
I am looking at starting my birding for 2017 from Dubbo towards Tamworth. Can anyone recommend some suitable spots to explore via 2WD in Goonoo Goonoo , particularly if there’s a chance of seeing Malleefowl? I’m looking at staying at the free camp at either Mendooran or Binnaway to allow . . . → Read More: RFI Mendooran, Binnaway, Werris Creek Road
By Birding-Aus, on December 31st, 2016 Hi all..? Just thought I’d write a quick post
Yesterday I was in Bright (vic) Dropped some friends off with their Mountain bikes at ‘Hugget lookout’ area, just as you start to drive onto a dirt road section. Heard the distinctive sound of Gang Gang Cockatoos making their creaking sounds…went looking with bino’s and discovered . . . → Read More: Gang gangs & Shrike tits
By Birding-Aus, on December 28th, 2016 Tromsø is in the middle of mørketiden, the dark period, and these days we have very little daylight (an hour of twilight) and no sun at all, the consequence of living so far north. Fortunately we did get a White Christmas after all, even though it was at the last moment: two weeks of rain . . . → Read More: 2017
By Birding-Aus, on December 28th, 2016 Hi all I have a chance to spend a day in the lower Hunter region on Friday near Newcastle. I plan to visit Hexham Swamp and Stockton Bridge for just after high tide (which is 10:30ish). The forecast suggests it’s going to be a bit warm – any other suggestions for where some good birds . . . → Read More: Current Lower Hunter Valleyconditions
By Birding-Aus, on December 28th, 2016 Dear all,
I am spending a few weeks with the family in Hobart early next year and was looking for help with birding in the area. I have visited before but struggled to locate the Dusky Robin and Scrubtit.
Any guidance would be appreciated.

By Birding-Aus, on December 28th, 2016 Ok, as mentioned previously, HBW has split blue-faced honeyeater, and revived golden-backed honeyeater as separate species. I suspect it is because of this paper:
onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1365-294X.2010.04730.x/abstract;jsessionid=984FC9634978F34902940A931109FA9B.f04t02
which is a fascinating paper.
Essentially I think it has the genetic split within blue-face as quite deep.
Also, golden-backed is genetically distinct from black chinned honeyeater but not as . . . → Read More: melithreptus and blue-faced honeyeater
