By Birding-Aus, on January 10th, 2017 Hi all I will be spending the coming weekend (13-16 Jan) at Millthorpe, just outside Orange in NSW. There won’t be much birding time and I think it’s going to be a bit warm, but suggestions on spots that might be good for a short morning or evening walk, and ideas on generally good spots . . . → Read More: RFI – Orange, NSW
By Birding-Aus, on January 10th, 2017 The IOC 7.1 has just been released. There are no changes to the Australian list. The proposed Intermediate Egret spit has not been included. It still remains a proposed split.

By Birding-Aus, on January 10th, 2017 Last Friday night, whilst watching the football match between Melbourne City and the Western Sydney Wanderers at AAMI Park, there was a White-bellied Sea-Eagle calling in the background, if I am not mistaken. If correct, I assume this is to deter the many silver gulls that can often arrive on the pitch once it begins . . . → Read More: Sea-Eagle at Aami Park

A week ago I sent a mail, complaining about a surfeit of weather here in N.Norway these last weeks and telling that my 2017 year list now stood at all of 5 birds. Since then we have had two more winter storms, rainy days followed by snow . . . → Read More: few year birds, but one surpise

I have been in touch with the Council Ranger at Northam, WA regarding the Mute Swans.
There is an enclosure which the swans may/may not use for breeding. The enclosure was constructed about 18 years ago.
The swan’s wings are trimmed each year when they have their check-up and receive their inoculations. Their . . . → Read More: Mute Swans
By Birding-Aus, on January 9th, 2017 G’day all,
I’m trying to get in touch with Tas Masked Owl researcher Michael Woods. I seem to have misplaced his contacts so if someone could point me in the right direction, I’d appreciate it.
All the best,

By Birding-Aus, on January 9th, 2017 Another obscure one I’m afraid: · Birds of Paradise and bowerbirds both have 12 rectrices and 10 primaries, but bowerbirds have an atypically large number of secondaries (11-14 including the tertials)
How many secondaries for paradisaeids though? A diagram in Frith & Beehler numbers just 8, but if you include the tertials I guess . . . → Read More: How many secondaries does a Bird of Paradise have?
