‘Pretty gruesome’: giant coconut crab seen hunting birds

Hi Anthea, There are lots of big Robber Crabs on Christmas Island! Lets hope eating birds doesn’t occur to them. We were there during the red crab migration and did see plenty of robber crabs eating red crabs that had been squished on the road.

?Pretty gruesome?: giant coconut crab seen

Hi Anthea,

Judging from the red feet, I reckon it’s a red-footed booby.

They have been documented breeding on those islands.

Cheers

Greg

Can anyone ID the unfortunate Booby in the picture? Do Robber Crabs occur on Christmas Island? Let’s hope not!

Differences between the Australian subspecies of the Yellow-billed Kingfisher and those of New Guinea

Hello All, Recently I did a trip to Iron Range with Ken Haines and Ken spotted and photographed a female Yellow-billed Kingfisher. Fw: Birding apps for the UK and Europe

Thanks to everyone who responded.

I’ve gone for the Collins app (it turns out my old UK Field Guide is also Collins).

I’m about to move to England for two years so they should both get a work out,

Nick
