Aleutian Terns – A BARC Question

G’day

I had the pleasure of an hour or two with the Aleutian Terns at Old Bar yesterday. I was travelling from Sydney to Brisbane, and it was no difficulty to divert the dozen km off the highway.

The terns were remarkably settled and very tolerant of people. They only took to the air while . . . → Read More: Aleutian Terns – A BARC Question

Black Bittern call

Is there anyone out there who is familiar with the calls of Black Bittern? I am looking for someone to listen to a recording and then pass judgement on a potentially important observation for me.

G’day all

Has anyone been on a birding trip in Indonesia with this company? I’m interested in their Java-Sumatra tour later in 2018.

ONE RED-RUMPED SWALLOW with+/-20 Barn Swallows at Lower Daintree FNQ yesteday

Hello all,

the lone Red-rumped Swallow is still here on the very same wires where I first found it on Thurs 21/12/17.

I was checking out the site from 5:15pm-6pm yesterday, and it was nice to see it still there – I was beginning to think that it had moved on elsewhere having not seen . . . → Read More: ONE RED-RUMPED SWALLOW with+/-20 Barn Swallows at Lower Daintree FNQ yesteday

Mulgoa unusuals

Yesterday and today, January 3 and 4, two GREENFINCHES singing/ calling, from Willow and Monterey pines. First sighting for at least ten years.

Also a locally unusual WHISTLING KITE gliding overhead today, much to the consternation of a single YTBlack Cockatoo feeding in a row of pines, which flew out screaming.

Happy New Year.

Birds as predators

Hi Graeme,

Yes Whipbirds and others, the list appears to be increasing……

There may however not be predation involved in this odd case of the Logrunners. It is, it seems, so out of character. It could have been just an intent to remove the noisy competitor or disrupt the nesting. I don’t know. Just a . . . → Read More: Birds as predators

Birds as predators

Following on the interesting observation of Logrunners, I’m sure there are quite a few species not regarded as predators that welcome a bit of extra protein when available.

A friend of mine regularly monitors the nests of Superb Fairy-wrens on his property.

He has had to resort to building cages of chicken-wire around the nests . . . → Read More: Birds as predators

White-throated Needletails

Happy New Year! As I write at least 150 – 200 WTNT are slowly feeding/ moving south over Yamba and Pippi Beach, northern NSW. I have been watching them since 07.40 and it is now 08.15 and small groups of 10-20 to feed at eye-level in front of our balcony – we happen to be . . . → Read More: White-throated Needletails
