By Birding-Aus, on December 21st, 2018 Hi, Does anybody out there know why magpies (sample photo attached on one caught at home) lie in the full sun on the hottest days in summer sometimes for 15 to 20 minutes. Some cooling mechanism? Any journal articles available?
Many thanks
David in Blackheath

By Birding-Aus, on December 21st, 2018 No, I don't think the subspecies was determined. However, its accepted on the WA Museum's Checklist of the Birds of Western Australia with a note: "Mutilated bird found aboard a vessel at Barrow I. January 2018." Cheers, Nigel

By Birding-Aus, on December 21st, 2018 Really interesting stuff! Nigel do we know what the Elegant subspecies was on the Pilbara boat? The IOC excel document have a note next to vigorsii (Double-striped Pitta Pitta vigorsii is a subspecies of Elegant Pitta P. elegans (Dickinson 2003)). vigorsii is also found in SW New Guinea.
Best wishes,
James Mustafa

By Birding-Aus, on December 20th, 2018 Hi All,
About 40 White-throated Needletails currently circling overhead in Ryde, heading generally in a SSE direction at an elevation of around 100 m.
A major thunderstorm with heavy rain and light to moderate winds occurred overnight, heavy cloud cover. More heavy rain forecast for the next few days.

By Birding-Aus, on December 20th, 2018 Angus McNab (great name) says that much if not most research done for Environmental background studies is not made public or kept quiet for a very long time. Which begs the question; who then does decide whether the project goes ahead if the research does does show significant environmental damage, including effects on wildlife.

By Birding-Aus, on December 19th, 2018 A moment to respond to some comments about this thread relating to this story: http://sunshinecoastbirds.blogspot.com/2018/12/endangered-red-goshawks-netted-and.html Angus says I am wrong to claim that the Queensland Government has handed over responsibility for the project to Rio Tinto.
