Hi Steve,
Thanks for the report. My father and I have just returned from a trip up the Strzelecki Track (23 Mar – 1 Apr) also looking for Grasswren spp. We did not attempt Bulloo Overflow due to rain while we were in Tibooburra.
The weather was very hot for most of our trip. We did not have a peep out of Short-tailed Grasswren at Stokes Hill or Appealinna Ruins track in the Flinders Ranges, nor anything from Thick-billed Grasswren around Mount Lyndhurst (but did get onto both Whiteface spp). Despite 40+ temperatures, we had Eyrean Grasswren calling loudly in the middle of the day on the dune approx. 36km west of Cameron Corner, but strong northerlies made it too difficult for us to get a sighting. Sounds like we had the same issue with flies.
It’s worth noting that the Corner Country region experienced the highest temperatures during the Australian summer heat waves (Moomba Airport had 49.6 degrees). ( http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/current/season/aus/summary.shtml). The past twelve months rainfall has also been below to very much below average in that part of the continent ( http://www.bom.gov.au/jsp/awap/rain/index.jsp?colour=colour&time=latest&step=0&map=decile&period=12month&area=nat ).
Regards,
